Life Technologies Acquires Microscopy Company

Compared with most of Life Technologies’ acquisitions, which have been focused on consumables, this purchase is focused on instrumentation. However, these systems will drive sales of Life Technologies’ Molecular Probes fluorescent dyes and probes. Life Technologies stated that the microscopy market is worth $770 million. The EVOS line includes the EVOSFL multicolor fluorescent microscope.

Carlsbad, CA 11/5/12—Life Technologies has acquired Advanced Microscopy Group (AMG), incorporated as Westover Scientific, a developer of imaging systems for research microscopy, for an undisclosed amount. Life Technologies’ FLoid Cell Imaging Station for fluorescent microscopy is manufactured by AMG. AMG also provides the EVOS range of microscopes, which includes systems that address the tissue culture market. “With AMG’s demonstrated excellence in innovative microscopy instrumentation and the Molecular Probes line of market leading imaging reagents, we’re now better able to serve our customers with a complete portfolio of integrated solutions for cell analysis optimized for performance and ease of use,” stated Peter Dansky, president of Molecular and Cell Biology at Life Technologies. The acquisition is expected to be neutral to Life Technologies 2012 earnings, accretive to earnings in 2013 and accretive to ROIC by 2015. AMG will join Life Technologies’ Flow Cytometry and Imaging business unit and will remain located in Bothell, Washington.
