Merck Chemicals Acquires Indian Bioscience Company
Merck stated that the acquisition will make it “one of the leading bioscience companies in India.” Founded in 1989, BGIP was acquired by the Sanmar Group in 2003.
Darmstadt, Germany and Bangalore, India 10/13/09—Merck KGaA has acquired Bangalore Genei (BGIP) through it wholly owned Indian subsidiary, Merck Specialities Private, from Sanmar Specialty Chemicals. The purchase price was not disclosed. BGIP specializes in the development, production, marketing and sale of products for proteomic and genomic research. BGIP has 100 employees and had fiscal 2009 sales of INR 202 million ($137 million). “BGIP’s leadership in the Indian academic market, a segment with high growth potential, will ideally complement our existing customer base,” commented Christina Shasserre, global head of Merck’s Bioscience business.
