Nanotechnology

The President’s Council on Advisors on Science & Technology recently released a new report on nanotechnology. Recommendations include increased investments in nanotech manufacturing, nanotech commercialization, training of nanofabrication workers, and environment, health and safety research. Fourteen of the 25 federal agencies that participate in the National Nanotechnology Initiative (NNI) also provide funding for it. For fiscal 2011, the NNI’s budget proposal totals $1.8 billion, of which the largest portions would go to “fundamental phenomena and processes” (28%) and “nanoscale devices and systems” (23%). Information from workshops held by the NNI over the past year will be used to draft new plans for nanotech environment, health and safety research and for the NNI.
