Testing by New Zealand’s Ministry of Primary Industries (MPI) has revealed that whey protein concentrate made by Fonterra, the world’s largest processor of dairy products, does not contain clostridium botulinum, which can cause botulism, but rather bacteria clostridum sporogenes. Earlier this month, Fonterra announced a worldwide recall of products containing the concentrate after testing by the company and a government research institute indicated clostridium botulinum’s presence. MPI began its testing following notification by Fonterra of the contamination. New Zealand Trade Minister Tim Groser stated the incident was embarrassing to the country.
