PerkinElmer Adds to Bioinformatics Capabilities

This is the third informatics acquisition that PerkinElmer has announced this year (see IBO 3/31/11). PerkinElmer reported in its quarterly SEC filing that it paid $13.3 million in cash for Geospiza, which will join its Human Health segment. On PerkinElmer’s quarterly conference call, Chairman and CEO Robert Friel stated that he views informatics as a “real opportunity,” noting that customers are seeking better access to information and ways of sharing of it.

Waltham, MA 5/5/11—PerkinElmer has acquired Geospiza, a developer of software systems for the management of genetic analysis and laboratory workflows delivered through a cloud-computing environment. Financial details were not disclosed. PerkinElmer stated that the acquisition supports its Next Generation DNA Sequencing and Analysis Services offerings (see IBO 2/15/11). “The acquisition of Geospiza, along with existing software in our various diagnostic businesses, gives PerkinElmer a strong platform for offerings in nucleic acid testing,” commented Richard Begley, PhD, president, Emerging Technologies at PerkinElmer. “Geospiza is a leader in its industry, and a strong addition to PerkinElmer’s bioinformatics capabilities. We look forward to expanding our family of genetic analysis offerings in research, drug discovery and diagnostics.” Geospiza’s products include the GeneSifter Analysis Edition for analysis of microarray and next-generation sequencing data and the GeneSifter Lab Edition out-of-the-box lab management system.
