The number of employees at the 11 largest pharmaceutical companies declined 4% to 932,825 between 2007 and 2012. Three firms recorded a decline in headcount: Pfizer (-12%), AstraZeneca (-10%) and Sanofi (-2%). The only company to boost employment by more than 5% was Johnson & Johnson (9%). The annual change last year in employee numbers for the firms was flat. From 2007 to 2012, employee numbers at seven other drug companies with a market value exceeding $30 billion (Baxter International, Teva Pharmaceutical Industries, Novo Nordisk, Amgen, Biogen Idec, Gilead Sciences, Celgene) grew 31% to 165,329. Three of these companies boosted employee figures by more than 60%: Celgene (179%), Gilead Sciences (68%) and Teva (65%). In 2012, employee numbers for the seven firms grew 4%.
