Battelle and R&D Magazine estimate that federal support of R&D in 2008 will increase 2.46% to $102 billion. Industry support will increase 3.61% to $235.7 billion, 3.58% to $2.6 billion, and 3.23% to $1.4 billion with respect to the industrial, academic and nonprofit sectors. Academic R&D spending is predicted to rise 3.70% to $13 billion. However, nonprofit R&D spending for academia will decline 3.10% to $3.2 billion, and increase for the nonprofit sector by 8.34% to $8.9 billion. In total, R&D funding for the federal, industrial, academic and nonprofit sectors is expected to increase 1.16% to $25.2 billion, 3.37% to $258.7 billion, 5.27% to $54.6 billion, and 4.33% to $15.9 billion, respectively.
