Commissioned by GE and managed by StrategyOne, the GE Global Innovation Barometer surveyed 1,000 executives in 12 countries, who are involved with their companies’ innovation processes. Among respondents, 95% agreed that innovation was the main component of a more competitive national economy. Eighty-eight percent indicated that the best way to create jobs in their country was innovation. Innovation will be “totally different” than in the past, according to 75% of respondents. Over the next decade, 40% of executives believe the combination of individuals, government and universities will foster innovation the most. Eighty-six percent said partnerships between several organizations are more significant than the success of a single one. Seventy-five percent agreed that individuals and small- to mid-size companies will be equally as innovative as their larger counterparts. Seventy-six percent of respondents said innovation “will need to be localized to serve specific markets.” When asked to list the three countries they considered “leading innovation champions,” 67% of executives indicated the US, 44% cited Germany, and 43% said Japan.
