This month, Science and Nature both published papers calling for a government-led initiative for studying microbiomes. These communities of microorganisms, which influence human health and the environment, are becoming the subject of much interest and research, yet relatively little is known about how they function. However, some microbiomes have been successfully manipulated, such as through fecal transplants, and increasing understanding of these communities could result in other treatments. The papers’ authors said that the complexity of microbiomes will require long-term study to understand them sufficiently to control their effects. New technologies and methods of data collection and analysis may also be necessary, such as to observe their molecular activity. The authors of the Nature paper have called for the US to coordinate with other countries to study microbiomes. The White House is considering increasing its support for and is working to focus government efforts on microbiome research.
