The World Economic Forum’s “Global Competitiveness Report 2009–2010” ranks Switzerland as the most competitive country, followed by the US, Singapore, Sweden and Denmark. Rankings were based on a Global Competitiveness Index, which is composed of 12 pillars of competitiveness, including innovation. Japan, Germany, Switzerland, Sweden and Finland were rated the highest for innovation capacity. Switzerland, the US, Israel, the UK and Germany were the highest rated for the quality of their scientific research institutions. Switzerland, Japan, Sweden, Germany and the US were the highest rated for their companies’ spending on R&D. The US, Switzerland, Finland, Singapore and Sweden had the most university-business R&D collaborations. Top ranked for government procurement decisions that foster technological innovation were Singapore, United Arab Emirates, Luxembourg, the US and Qatar.
