Semiconductor firms’ R&D spending is forecast to grow 10% this year to $53.4 billion. In 2011, 12 companies spent more than $1 billion on R&D, with Intel accounting for 17% of the semiconductor industry’s total R&D spending. US, Japanese and European companies accounted for 57%, 17% and 10% of worldwide semiconductor R&D spending last year. Integrated device manufacturers fabless suppliers represented 66% and 29%, respectively.
