Singapore’s 2010 gross expenditures on R&D (GERD) increased 7.4% to SGD 6.5 billion ($5.0 billion) according to a national survey. Business expenditures on R&D (BERD) rose 6.0% to SGD 3.9 billion, for which 799 companies were responsible. The BERD for “electronics, infocomms and media,” the largest market category, grew 0.2% to SGD $2.31 billion. The BERD for biomedical sciences increased 13.2% to SGD 597.3 million. Public expenditures on R&D (PUBERD) grew 9.6% to SGD 2.5 billion and was comprised of 66 institutions. PUBERD for “electronics, infocomms and media” rose 10.8% to SGD 557.3 million. For biomedical sciences, PUBERD grew 12.5% to SGD 897.4 million. Total R&D manpower, which includes students, technicians and support staff, increased 4.3% to 43,164 individuals in 2010, with the number of researchers rising 5.9% to 30,801.
