Sony Acquires Microfluidics Firm

According to the Mainichi Daily News, Micronics has 30 employees. Micronics’ products for research include the microFlow System low-pulse pump workstation and accompanying Active Cards microfluidic cartridges, as well as the manual Access Cards.

Tokyo, Japan 9/28/11—Sony has announced the acquisition of Micronics, a provider of microfluidics technology for diagnostic applications, including point-of-care solutions, and research applications. The main focus of the company recently has been a molecular diagnostic platform for infectious diseases, according to Sony. “We believe that the combination of Micronics’ development capabilities in the medical diagnosis domain and our consumer electronics and IT technologies, such as in optical discs, will enable us to offer innovative solutions that are responsive to the rapidly escalating needs for point-of-care diagnosis worldwide,” stated Keiji Kimura, executive vice president and executive officer at Sony. Micronics will keep its Redmond, Washington, location, and its management team, led by President Karen Hedine, will remain.
