Sweden
The Swedish government has increased its amount of R&D funding 2.6% to SEK 32.9 billion ($5.1 billion), or 4% of its total 2014 budget. Statistics Sweden estimates that approximately half the R&D budget will support institutions of higher education for a total of SEK 16.4 billion, an increase of 2.5%. The Swedish Research Council will receive SEK 5.8 billion, and SEK 1.3 billion will go to defense. In terms of R&D objectives, funding for “general advancement of knowledge” will increase 2.8% to SEK 23.7 billion. Recipients of most of these funds will be the Council as well as colleges and universities. Within the objective, mathematics, medicine and natural science will receive the majority of these appropriations. Other objectives to benefit are the production and distribution of energy, and health care services, with increases of SEK 120 million and SEK 90 million, respectively. Statistics Sweden also estimated funding from public foundations for R&D will decrease 2.7% to SEK 1.1 billion.
