R&D expenditure in Sweden totaled SEK 113.2 billion ($17.8 billion) in 2010, an increase of 1.4% from 2009. R&D expenditure in the government sector increased 10.1% to SEK 5.5 billion. Government expenditure includes government agency, county council, municipal, and local and regional R&D spending and does not include Agreement on Medical Training and Research funds, which are classified as part of the higher education sector. Agencies contributed the bulk of government spending at SEK 3.3 billion, a 15.6% increase. County council, municipal, and local and regional R&D spending increased 4.2%, 19.3% and 12.2% to SEK 2.0 billion, SEK 105.0 million and SEK 156.0 million, respectively. R&D expenditures at higher education institutes grew 5.3% to SEK 29.8 billion, but expenditures for R&D in the business enterprise sector declined 2.0% to SEK 77.8 billion. The figures are estimates from R&D surveys, with additional information supplied by data obtained during 2011.
