The Taiwanese government has drafted a bill to set up a new agency, the Food and Drug Administration (TFDA), to strengthen food and drug safety. The TFDA will assume the duties of the Department of Health’s Bureau of Food Safety, Bureau of Pharmaceutical Affairs, Bureau of Food and Drug Analysis, and Bureau of Controlled Drugs. Food safety will be a major focus of the TFDA, which will establish five new facilities in the country to improve the government’s response to food safety incidents. The TFDA is expected to add 173 employees, bringing its total number of staff to 565. If approved during the current legislative session, the TFDA could begin operations next year.
