Tecan’s Fluent

In June, Tecan announced the Fluent, its liquid-handling system for cell and biochemical assays. Compared with the Freedom EVO, the Fluent has faster robotic arms that operate simultaneously, offering higher speed and throughput.

The three task-specific robotic arms are the Flexible Channel Arm for individual sample transfer; the Multiple Channel Arm for plate-to-plate transfers and serial dilutions; and the Robotic Gripper Arm for moving tips, plates and other labware between the other arms, integrated devices or storage. The instrument’s FluentControl software, which also allows the user to define their functions, controls the arms.

Adaptive Signal Technology decreases reagent and sample volumes required for assays. Martin Braendle, head of Corporate Communications and Investor Relations of Techne, told IBO, “As each pipette tip moves downward in the vessel, the [liquid-detection] sensitivity increases as the potential volume decreases. Dual-signal analysis . . . confirms correct detection and increases the accuracy of detection, thus enabling detection of smaller volumes and lowering the dead volume of samples and reagents.”

The instrument’s Dynamic Deck offers flexibility in positioning other devices, including cabinet-based instruments, for integration with the system. It also has a double deck positioned to accommodate taller benchtop devices.

Tecan is extending the Fluent’s use to compound management and, next year, to further applications. Available in three sizes with different capacities and throughputs, the Fluent can have one to three robotic arms. The instrument will begin shipping in the third quarter.
