Thermo Buys Lab Water Company

TKA was founded in 1994. The company’s systems include electrodeionization, reverse osmosis and ultrafiltration technologies. The acquisition adds to Thermo’s line of laboratory water purification systems, which include the Barnstead brand. Competitors in this market include Merck Millipore and Sartorius.

Milford, MA 12/21/10—Thermo Fisher Scientific has acquired TKA Wasseraufbereitungssysteme GmbH, a provider of laboratory water purification systems. Financial details were not disclosed. Based in Niederelbert, Germany, TKA had 2009 revenues of €10 million ($14 million = €0.72 = $1) and has 60 employees. “The demand for ultrapure water, in particular, is driven by the ever-increasing sensitivity of analytical instruments used in life science research,” stated Thomas Loewald, president of Laboratory Equipment for Thermo Fisher Scientific. TKA’s headquarters will become a center for R&D and manufacturing of laboratory water purification systems. The company will join Thermo’s Laboratory Products and Services segment.
