Waters Acquires Ionization Technology
A Waters spokesperson told IBO, “Recently, Waters has more closely aligned our life science–application group with our clinical-application group to form the Health Science Initiative.” She also said, “There is a bottleneck in the ‘Health Science Continuum’ that is hampering the realization of personalized medicine. We believe LC/MS is perfectly positioned to address this bottleneck between research and diagnostics.” She said REIMS has potential applications for food safety, microbiology and clinical diagnostics.
Milford, MA 7/22/14; Budapest, Hungary 7/22/14—Waters has acquired Rapid Evaporative Ionization Mass Spectrometry (REIMS) technology, which represents substantially all the assets of Hungarian start-up company MediMass. REIMS can be used as an ambient ionization source for MS. Waters plans to commercialize a REIMS ion source for its TOF-MS systems. In addition, Waters plans to continue the development of the technology for the “Intelligent Knife,” a device for potential use for real-time diagnostics during surgery. “This technology acquisition along with our recent agreement with Prosolia, Inc. for the exclusive rights to Desorption Electrospray Ionization technology in clinical applications are key components in our burgeoning Heath Sciences initiative,” stated Rohit Khanna, vice president, Worldwide Marketing and Informatics, Waters Division. “Both direct-from-sample ion-source technologies are strategic discriminators as we look to grow the impact of mass spectrometry throughout the Health Sciences Continuum.” Waters participated in a three-year collaboration with the MediMass and Imperial College London focused on the technology.
