American Science and Engineering, Inc. Receives $3.0 Million Order

Repeat Order for Middle East Government to Deploy ZBV Systems for Counterterrorism Applications

BILLERICA, Mass.–American Science and Engineering, Inc. (NASDAQ: ASEI – News) (AS&E®) announced today the receipt of a $3.0 million order for a Middle Eastern government for multiple Z Backscatter™ Vans (ZBV™). Configured for harsh environments, the ZBVs will be utilized for counterterrorism applications including securing government facilities and mobile checkpoints. The order includes AS&E provided operator training, service, and warranty; and multiple Forwardscatter® units.

“As shown with this repeat order, this valued Middle East customer has seen the benefits of the ZBV’s exceptional versatility and rapid bomb detection capability,” said Anthony R. Fabiano, President and CEO. “The ZBVs will be equipped with AS&E’s Forwardscatter technology to enhance detection of dense objects in scanned vehicles and cargo — ideal for detecting metallic threats including the shielding around nuclear weapons. These two unique technologies help make the ZBV the mobile X-ray system of choice to support critical security missions.”

AS&E’s Z Backscatter™ Van (ZBV™)

The Most Maneuverable, Versatile Mobile X-ray Detection System on the Market

A breakthrough in X-ray detection technology, AS&E’s Z Backscatter Van is the number one selling non-intrusive mobile inspection system on the market. The ZBV is a low-cost, highly mobile screening system built into a commercially available delivery van. The ZBV system allows for immediate deployment in response to security threats and its high throughput capability facilitates rapid inspection. The system’s unique “drive-by” capability allows operators to conduct X-ray imaging while driving past suspect vehicles and objects. For personnel safety in dangerous environments, a remote console is available for operating the system in stationary mode from a distance of up to 500 meters.

About Forwardscatter® Technology

AS&E offers Forwardscatter technology to complement ZBV’s Z Backscatter technology. Forwardscatter presents a second scatter perspective that displays dense objects in vehicles and cargo, such as the shielding found around nuclear WMD or other metallic threats. With the ZBV in stationary scan mode, Forwardscatter detectors are positioned opposite the X-ray source in the ZBV. The Forwardscatter image is displayed simultaneously with the Z Backscatter image, providing the operator with additional information on the contents of a scanned vehicle.
