Ametek Establishes Atom Probe Technology Center

MADISON, WI – AMETEK Materials Analysis Division, a leader in high-end analytical instruments used in elemental and materials analysis, has established an Atom Probe Technology Center Madison, WI, at the headquarters of the recently acquired Imago Scientific Instruments.

“The Atom Probe Center further strengthens our leadership in this emerging technology by bringing together the field’s two pre-eminent developers—Imago Scientific and CAMECA SAS,” comments Alan H. Devenish, Vice President and General Manager of AMETEK Materials Analysis Division.

“Founded in 1999, Imago is a pioneer in the development of 3D atom probe technology used in advanced material science to conduct atomic level imaging and analysis,” adds Mr. Devenish. “Among its recent advancements is the Local Electrode Atom Probe (LEAP), which has greatly expanded the areas of research and application for this technology.”

“Imago is very pleased to be part of AMETEK,” notes Dr. Clive Jones, who is responsible for sales and marketing for the Madison-based operations. “The Atom Probe Technology Center will support CAMECA’s and Imago’s current customers, while further expanding the customer base for their LEAP and LAWATAP (laser-assisted, wide-angle tomographic atom probes) products.”

Acquired by AMETEK in April, Imago is integrated with the CAMECA business unit within AMETEK’s Materials Analysis Division, which provides a wide range of complementary imaging and analysis technologies. Among its customers are many of the world’s leading academic, government, and industrial research facilities engaged in nanotechnology and advanced materials science.

Headquartered near Paris, CAMECA was acquired by AMETEK in 2007. It pioneered the development of secondary ion mass spectrometry (SIMS) and electron probe microanalysis (EPMA) in the 1950s and achieved numerous breakthroughs in complementary techniques such as low-energy X-ray emission spectrometry (LEXES) and atom probe technology.

In addition to CAMECA and Imago, AMETEK’s Materials Analysis Division includes EDAX and SPECTRO Analytical Instruments, which offer a range of analytical instrumentation for applications in the metals, environmental, R&D, petrochemical, pharmaceutical, electronics, and forensic science markets, and Vision Research, a leader in high-speed digital imaging systems. AMETEK, Inc. is a leading global manufacturer of electronic instruments and electromechanical devices with annual sales of $2.1 billion.
