Applied Biosystems Names TLV Kumar President for Asia Pacific Region; Veteran Executive to Lead Company’s Growth Strategies Across Region

HONG KONG & FOSTER CITY, Calif.—Applied Biosystems (NYSE:ABI), an Applera Corporation business, today announced that TLV Kumar has been appointed president for its Asia Pacific operations. Applied Biosystems is a global leader in the life sciences industry and research community, developing and marketing instrument-based systems, consumables, software, and services. Kumar, age 51, will be responsible for executing the organization’s growth strategies throughout the region with direct oversight of all marketing, sales, product management, customer service, supply chain, purchasing, quality, regulatory and business excellence activities. He will report directly to Applied Biosystems’ president, Catherine M. Burzik.

A veteran executive with experience throughout the Asia Pacific region, Kumar joins Applied Biosystems from Philips Medical Systems, where he was chief operations officer for Asia Pacific. He previously held positions at Philips Medical that included regional director for the Middle East and Africa; managing director for India; and vice president for sales and marketing for India. Kumar began his business career with Blue Star Limited, India — the country’s largest air conditioning and commercial refrigeration company — where he spent nearly 20 years in positions of increasing responsibility that included vice president with responsibility for the India region for the company.

At Applied Biosystems, Kumar will lead a business that has significant operations throughout Asia Pacific, including Japan, China, Hong Kong, Taiwan, South Korea, Australia, New Zealand, and the 10 nations that comprise the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN). For the first nine months of the current fiscal year, the Asia Pacific region contributed $252 million (USD) or approximately 18 percent of global Applied Biosystems revenues. He will be based in Hong Kong.

Kumar received his degree in commerce and an MBA from the University of Madras in India.
