1. New & Enhanced Spectral Databases Released
Bio-Rad offers researchers access to one of the world’s largest collections with over 1.3 million spectra of pure organic and commercial compounds. These databases are used for the interpretation, classification, identification, and verification of unknown compounds. Bio-Rad has released two new spectral databases and enhanced two databases in their collection:
* Sadtler ATR of Controlled & Prescription Drugs
This new database contains 1,161 ATR-IR spectra of controlled and prescription drugs and steroids. This collection can be used by forensic as well as testing laboratories that are interested in the identification of drugs and steroids by infrared spectroscopy. Each compound in this database is identified by its drug/chemical name and the method of analysis as well as structural formula, molecular formula, and molecular weight when available. Synonyms, source of sample, catalog number, lot number, DEA Controlled Substance Code Number, Code of Federal Regulations, classification, and comments are displayed when available.
* Sadtler HNMR Chemical Shifts Database
With the addition of this new database, Bio-Rad’s HaveItAll NMR now includes chemical shift data of 20,391 more compounds. Each record in this database is identified by chemical name, solvent used in the analysis, instrument name, chemical structure, molecular formula, and molecular weight.
* NMR Metabolites Database
This collection of 1H and 13C NMR spectra now includes 532 compounds with 1,055 spectra from the BioMagResBank (BMRB) data, which doubles the number of spectra previously in this collection of proteins, peptides, and nucleic acids. This database can be used to identify potential biomarkers in metabolomics experiments.
* HaveItAll UV-Vis Database
4,200 spectra have been added to this comprehensive collection of UV-Vis spectra for a current total of 13,930 spectra – the world’s largest UV-Vis spectra collection.

2. KnowItAll Informatics System 8.1 Features Improvements to Spectral Mixture Analysis
Bio-Rad’s KnowItAll Informatics System is a fully integrated software and database package that provides scientific researchers multiple tools including database building and management, search, analysis, structure drawing, and reporting all within a single user interface. Bio-Rad offers specialized “editions” of its KnowItAll system specifically customized for spectroscopy and other areas of research. The latest KnowItAll release of KnowItAll features improvements to its spectral mixture analysis tool.
This application, introduced in release 8.0 of the KnowItAll system assists researchers in the determination of the components of these mixture spectra. With the application, researchers import the digital spectrum to be analyzed, and the software then searches and compares the sample to reference databases of known compounds. The results show possible components in the mixture from the reference databases. With the 8.1 release, results also include mixture component ratios to help researchers better understand the relative proportions of the components.
“Bio-Rad continues its leadership in the spectral data and software markets through the expansion of our spectral library collections and the development of critical software solutions such as mixture analysis to solve some of the most difficult problems faced by researchers,” said Gregory M. Banik, Ph.D., General Manager, Bio-Rad Informatics.
