Shimadzu announces the release of the IRSpirit-X series of Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectrophotometers: the IRSpirit-LX, IRSpirit-TX, and IRSpirit-ZX. These instruments provide both a small, lightweight design and the highest levels of sensitivity in their class. They are equipped with an analysis navigation program*1 enabling novice FTIR users to obtain data easily, and a function*2 that judges the quality of the measurement results and proposes how to obtain favorable data.
A Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectrophotometer is an analytical instrument that obtains information about an organic compound by detecting and computationally processing infrared light transmitted or reflected from a sample. This technique is utilized for sample identification, and to estimate the amount of the constituent components as well as their chemical structures. Results are quickly and easily obtained, making FTIR suitable for a diverse range of applications, including identification tests in pharmaceutical manufacturing processes, measurements of microplastics, and analysis of contaminants. In recent years, there have been calls for smaller, lighter FTIR systems that provide excellent basic performance and simpler operation.
This series features three models, which can be selected to suit the objective and environment of use: the entry-level IRSpirit-LX, the IRSpirit-TX, which has the highest sensitivity for a small FTIR*3, and the IRSpirit-ZX, which is capable of stable measurements in high-temperature and high-humidity regions due to more moisture-resistant components. All parts except for the initial consumables in this series are guaranteed for 10 years. With the IRSpirit-X series of Fourier transform infrared spectrophotometers, Shimadzu realizes an environment in which highly reliable data is more easily obtained. We will continue to develop systems to support research and development and quality control in a variety of markets.
Features
1. Combines a Small, Lightweight Instrument Design with High Performance
The IRSpirit-X series features the smallest Shimadzu FTIRs, with an installation space the size of an A3 sheet of paper or smaller, and a weight of 8.5 kg. They also boast the industry’s highest sensitivity in an FTIR system this size. Despite the compact size, the sample installation space adopted is in accordance with industry standards, enabling the use of optional attachments supplied from companies other than Shimadzu.
2. Enhanced Support Functions Provide Strong Support for Tasks
FTIR measurements are performed with optional attachments according to the objective, and the measurement conditions must be set for each attachment. In addition, measurement data is sensitive to the effects of humidity and other aspects of the peripheral environment, making it difficult for inexperienced users to set conditions and judge the quality of the data. To address this challenge, the IRSpirit-X series is equipped with a spectrum advisor function that supports the acquisition of high-quality data. The judgment of data quality is determined by comparing the measurement results with examples created based on optimal measurement conditions. The IR Pilot Analysis Navigation Program further simplifies operation. This function automatically sets the optimal measurement conditions based on information about the attachment being used. Lastly, the IRSpirit-X series can be simultaneously controlled with a Shimadzu energy dispersive X-ray (EDX) fluorescence spectrometer using a single PC. Using EDXIR-Analysis, a proprietary integrated analysis software program, measurement results on an organic compound from FTIR and an inorganic compound from EDX can be combined for more comprehensive data analysis, improving the efficiency of tasks such as contaminant analysis.
3. Additional Models Aimed at High-Temperature/High-Humidity Regions
A special mirror for separating and condensing the infrared light is built into the FTIR unit. In the IRSpirit-ZX model, the mirror adopted consists of zinc selenide (ZnSe), which is more moisture resistant than the traditionally used potassium bromide (KBr). Therefore, this model can be used with confidence in high-temperature and high-humidity regions.
