CPI Enterprises investment in BiologIC

BiologIC Technologieshas received an investment from CPI Enterprises. CPI is a recognised leader in bioprocessing innovation founded with a clear vision – to stimulate impactful investment into deep technology businesses.

Cambridge UK: BiologIC Technologies (“BiologIC”), the biocomputer company, announces today that it has received an investment from CPI Enterprises. BiologIC is the inventor of the biocomputer, a highly integrated and programmable automation system for producing biology and data on demand

The biocomputer processes components of biological origin, such as cells, DNA and biological reagents, into useful products such as therapies. Because it is highly integrated, the biocomputer reduces the need for multiple different instruments. Using hardware that is software configurable, the biocomputer can run multiple applications and, by integrating in-line sensing, biological productivity can be reliably controlled and improved. Much like servers in information processing, the biocomputer can be scaled from the lab bench to the enterprise.

By enabling greater bioprocessing power and real-time data at lower cost, the biocomputer can accelerate the speed to market and reduce the cost of therapies. The technology also offers the potential to use biology in powerful new applications to feed, fuel, heal, build and compute in ways that are more sustainable and affordable. BiologIC’s ambition is for the biocomputer to be to the bioeconomy what the computer is to the information economy.

Centre for Process Innovation (“CPI”) is a recognised leader in bioprocessing innovation and CPI Enterprises is the is the venture capital and investor engagement arm of CPI. It was founded with a clear vision – to stimulate impactful investment into early-stage deep technology businesses.

Since 2021, BiologIC and CPI have collaborated on multiple projects to advance the next generation of bioprocess innovation, combining their respective world-leading expertise in next generation technologies and therapy bioprocessing. These collaborations have included innovations in process intensification, in-line process analytic technologies and continuous manufacturing in large scale monoclonal antibody therapy production as well as small footprint continuous mRNA vaccine manufacturing.

Richard Vellacott, Chief Executive Officer of BiologIC Technologies commented: “As inventors of the biocomputer, our ambition is to use our foundational technology to drive a revolution in biology processing to help humanity address global problems, such as the existential threat of diseases, in sustainable, affordable and accessible ways.

“New therapy modalities and significant cost and productivity gains lie at the intersection of technology and biology. As such, we are particularly delighted that CPI, as a world leader in bioprocessing innovation, has joined our high quality investors to further accelerate our commercial and technology traction.”

Frank Millar, Chief Executive Officer of Centre for Process Innovation commented: “As a partner to many leading innovators, CPI is in a unique position to leverage world-class expertise and to take businesses from innovation to commercialisation whilst investing in the future business leaders. Over the last 18 years, CPI has developed into one of the largest and best resourced innovation centres in the UK.

Having collaborated closely over an extended period, we are impressed at the speed of execution and commercial traction of BiologIC. We see strong advantages in BiologIC’s biocomputer system and the ability to increase bioprocess productivity relative to the competition in the sector. Richard and the management team have built an impressive business and we are delighted to support and contribute to the business as it enters an exciting new phase of growth.”
