Era7 Bioinformatics is now a member of The Global Alliance for Genomics and Health
Era7 Bioinformatics is proud to announce that it has recently become member of The Global
Alliance for Genomics and Health (https://genomicsandhealth.org/). Global Alliance is an
international coalition formed to facilitate the sharing of genomical and clinical data, with the
intention of promoting potential advancements in medicine and science. It brings together over 220
leading institutions working in healthcare, research, disease advocacy, life science, and
information technology. The idea behind this Alliance is that the promise of genomic data to
revolutionise biology and medicine depends critically on our ability to make comparisons across
millions of human genome sequences, but this requires coordination across organisations,
methods, diseases, and even countries. The members of the Global Alliance for Genomics and
Health are working together to create interoperable approaches and catalyse initiatives that will
help unlock the great potential of genomic data. The partners in the Global Alliance are working
together to create a common framework of harmonised approaches to enable the responsible,
voluntary, and secure sharing of genomic and clinical data.
Eduardo Pareja, CEO of Era7 Bioinformatics commented: “In Era7 Bioinformatics we are excited
about the fact of being members of The Global Alliance for Genomics and Health and we are
committed to do our best in order to collaborate to reach the objectives of the Alliance and support
advances in human health through scientific collaboration”.
Era7 Bioinformatics shares this philosophy and has been since its beginning a firm advocate of the
sharing of knowledge following an Open Source and Open Data approach. Being Open Source
means that Era7 can concentrate all the development efforts in innovation, the design of new
solutions and their adaptation to the customer. We are particular thrilled developing Bio4j, a highperformance
cloud-enabled graph-based Open Source bioinformatics data platform, that integrates
the data available in open data sources around protein information. This platform could be very
helpful pursuing the goal of a better and useful genomics data interpretation. Bio4j was selected
this year as one of the projects funded by Google Summer of Code 2014. Google Summer of Code
is a 10-year-old global program that offers funding to leading Open Source projects from all kind of
knowledge areas being in this way a program that promotes the general access to high quality
software projects. Bio4j is the platform backing Genome7 (www.genome7.com), Era7’s Cancer
Genomics Solution.
About Era7 Bioinformatics
Era7 Bioinformatics (www.era7bioinformatics.com) is a leader company in Next Generation
Sequencing (NGS) and Bioinformatics for Bacterial Genomics and Metagenomics. Era7 was
founded in Spain and it has a subsidiary in Cambridge, Massachusetts, USA since 2012. Era7’s
business model is based on helping its clients in all the steps of a genomics project, from the
design of the project and the sequencing, to an expert bioinformatics analysis, specialised
bioinformatics consultancy and the development of applications and customised software. This is
possible thanks to the strong research-oriented activity that Era7 carries out, the use of Cloud
Computing and the advantages of developing software under an Open Source model.
