GeneBio Launches SmileMS 0.9 at Swiss MedLab International Congress

Geneva, Switzerland – September 16, 2008 – Geneva Bioinformatics (GeneBio) SA today announced the expansion of its existing mass spectrometry (MS)-based offering with the public launch of version 0.9 of SmileMS, its unique solution to rapidly screen large sets of molecules with high confidence.

SmileMS is a unique software platform for the identification and analysis of small molecules by mass spectrometry. Developed in collaboration with the Swiss Institute of Bioinformatics (SIB) and Prof. Denis Hochstrasser’s group at the Geneva University Hospitals, SmileMS is an innovative solution that targets an unmet yet growing need for efficient and automatable processes using LC-MS techniques for routine daily analysis of small molecules.

The company has already announced at ASMS 2008 its endeavour in this new field, and is coming today, less than 4 months after, with a first version that has already been successfully tested and implemented for a broad range of applications like Clinical Chemistry, Toxicology, Food Testing as well as Legal Medicine and that can be extended to other fields such as Doping, Therapeutic Drug Monitoring and other needs in laboratory medicine. SmileMS comprises a plethora of innovative features, including:

Powerful Instrument-Independent Algorithm

-Designed to be instrument-vendor-independent, thus efficiently handling data acquired on different types of mass spectrometers

-Highly sensitive algorithm, even when searching libraries generated from a different instrument or under other acquisition settings

-Robust statistics-based kernel

-Features high-end discrimination power

Intuitive and Flexible Web Interface

-Innovative, very intuitive Web-based interface

-Simple analysis workflows: prepare a submission – evaluate results – generate customizable reports

-Results provided in various flavors, including molecule-centric and spectrum-centric views

-Dedicated roles and privileges for each user

-Client-server architecture allowing remote access to check and validate results

-Dedicated batch submission system to automate analyses processes

Enhanced Sharing of Spectra Libraries

-Full integration of NIST LC-MS/MS spectra library

-Reference library creation and maintenance feature that allow the seamless further integration of private (Weinmann, Marquet, etc.) or public libraries

-Share and search reference spectra libraries between collaborating laboratories

-A wide Range of Applications

-Successfully tested on data acquired on a wide variety of MS instruments

– Already used in toxicology analysis in clinics and forensic applications, and is being tested in food control and doping laboratories

“SmileMS is positioning GeneBio beyond its historical proteomics business and opens the gate to a wide variety of new applications and developments in the field of mass spectrometry that we are eager to discover with our partners,” said Nasri Nahas, CEO of GeneBio. “We developed this tool by capitalizing on our long lasting experience in the field of bioinformatics and notably MS-based identification platforms, like Phenyx for proteomics. Beyond the wide range of applications for which SmileMS has already been tested, the platform was already validated on an extensive number of mass spectrometers from different manufacturers, several of who have already shown high interest in this platform. In addition, our recent collaborative effort with the National Institute of Health has resulted in the integration of the National Institute of Standards and Technology’s latest LC-MS/MS spectral library, which is available with the current release. We are excited with the possibilities and look forward to a bright future for SmileMS.”
