Boston, MA, New York, NY and Hawthorne, CA – L-3 Communications has purchased PerkinElmer’s Detection Systems business for approximately $100 Million. The Detection Systems business primarily consists of security systems for the x-ray screening of cargo, baggage and parcels. L-3 Communications makes a computer tomography (CT) explosive detection system for baggage screening. With the expanded manufacturing capabilities and product lines from the acquisition, the company plans to expand its airport security systems business. OSI Systems, whose Rapiscan Security Products subsidiary makes x-ray screening and explosive detection systems (EDS), has signed a letter of intent with L-3 to purchase certain assets of PerkinElmer’s Detection Systems business, including the carry-on baggage screening business and the lower-cost ARGUS EDS product line designed for mid-sized, regional airports.
