Life Technologies Addresses Promise of Cell Therapies at Industry Leader Summit

Company Hosts Cell Therapy Summit to Discuss Best Practices for Bringing Therapeutics to Market

CARLSBAD, Calif.–Life Technologies Corporation (NASDAQ:LIFE), a provider of innovative life science solutions, today is hosting the 1st Annual Cell Therapy Industry Summit, gathering leaders from all areas of cell therapy to discuss best practices and opportunities for bringing potential life saving therapeutics to market. Participants hail from companies, academic institutions and the California Institute of Regenerative Medicine (CIRM).

Cell therapies are medical treatments wherein new cells are introduced into a patient to fight disease. Many of these therapies are based on stem cells, which are cells within the body that can differentiate into a range of specialized cell types. Scientists believe that therapies based on stem cells hold the promise to treat a wide range of debilitating conditions, including diabetes, Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s disease, and spinal cord injuries.

“Successful science relies on the open exchange of ideas that stimulate researchers to pursue new avenues of inquiry,” noted Greg Lucier, Chairman and CEO of Life Technologies. “Life Technologies is focused on shaping discovery, and by bringing together leaders in the regenerative medicine industry, we facilitate that discussion, which can only help push these potential life-altering therapies closer to the clinic and eventual commercialization.”

CIRM and two international partners recently awarded more than $250 million to 14 multidisciplinary teams of researchers in California, the United Kingdom and Canada to develop stem cell-based therapies for 11 diseases. The funding is expected to speed the process of establishing clinical trials.

“This meeting represents the first time that scientists and executives from companies focused on cell therapies have gathered in California to specifically discuss the pace of discovery at companies seeking to realize the promise of cell therapies,” said Alan Trounson, President of the California Institute for Regenerative Medicine. “Recent funding further establishes this state as the epicenter of innovation and these companies are among those whose work holds the greatest promise to ultimately bring innovative cell therapies to market.”

The Cell Therapy Industry Summit provides participants opportunities to learn from panel discussions and to network at various functions. Speakers from companies that are advancing the development of cell therapies will be discussing a wide range of topics including broad trends in the business side of cell therapies, issues critical to making cell therapeutics manufacturing more economical, and technical issues that must be overcome to facilitate the regulatory pathway for new medicines.

In addition to hosting this event in Carlsbad, California, Life Technologies is sponsoring 4th Annual Stem Cells on the Mesa Meeting today in La Jolla, California, which is hosted by the San Diego Consortium for Regenerative Medicine and produced by CONNECT. The Stem Cells on the Mesa Meeting draws together San Diego’s pioneers who are responsible for advancing research towards discovering cures for debilitating diseases or injuries.
