Life Technologies Named to Dow Jones Sustainability Index for Third Year
Company Also Recognized for Sustainability by NASDAQ and Maplecroft Indices
CARLSBAD, Calif. – Life Technologies Corporation (NASDAQ: LIFE), a provider of innovative life science solutions, announced it was named a member of the Dow Jones Sustainability World Index for the third year in a row. Life Technologies also announced its debut on the NASDAQ Global Sustainability List and second year on the Maplecroft Climate Innovation Index, and announced its commitment to transparency and carbon footprint reduction through participation in the Carbon Disclosure Project, demonstrating the company’s continued global leadership in business, environmental and social issues.
“These achievements showcase our continued leadership in sustainability and our ongoing efforts to reduce, reuse and recycle,” said Cristina Amorim, Vice President of Global Environmental Health, Safety and Citizenship for Life Technologies. “From how we build our products to how we run our buildings and operate our business, we are committed to making a difference in the environment and in our communities, and demonstrating how we help make life even better for everyone.”
Life Technologies was named a gold member of both the Dow Jones Sustainability World Index and the DJSI North America Index. Life Technologies is among the top 10 percent of the 2,500 largest global companies in terms of sustainability and has the index’s highest biotechnology sector ranking in corporate citizenship, operational eco-efficiency and workplace safety.
In addition, the company was added to the NASDAQ OMX CRD Global Sustainability Index (QCRD), and was ranked 16th out of 350 of the biggest US companies in the Maplecroft Climate Innovation Indexes Benchmark, part of the Maplecroft Climate Innovation Indexes.
Life Technologies announced it will be reporting on its efforts to reduce its carbon footprint and was recognized by the Carbon Disclosure Project, which named the company first in the life sciences tool and services group and in the top 10 in healthcare. The company’s efforts to reduce carbon emissions led to projected savings of more than five million kilowatt-hours of energy at its headquarters alone, preventing the emission of almost 4,500 tons of green house gasses company wide in 2009.
Life Technologies achieved these recognitions through a variety of innovative methods to reduce energy and water consumption, increase building performance and change product manufacturing and distribution methods.
Water and energy-saving projects included central plant retrofits, smart software application, enhanced off-hour usage management and refrigeration and lighting updates. Building improvements included landfill diversion measures and increased use of Energy-Star rated equipment, which led to LEED certifications at two major sites. Product level improvements include redesigned shipping containers and distribution methods and new product stewardship efforts, including an instrument take-back program.
