New Orleans biotech startup secures $1 million from investors

A New Orleans startup exploring the diagnostic aspects of genetic research has received more than $1 million from investors and plans to expand its business.

Pine Biotech, based at the New Orleans BioInnovation Center on Canal Street, has developed a software program to help scientists analyze and map large sets of molecular data — also known as “omics” — such as DNA, RNA and proteins. The information gleaned from the data has been used to map cancer cells and to discover genetic mutations that lead to cancer.

“By enabling researchers and clinicians to extract real insight from omics data, we hope that new and more effective approaches to diagnostics and therapeutics will be developed,” Pine Biotech CEO Elia Brodsky said in a statement.

Bri Sullivan, the company’s administrative secretary, said Pine Biotech plans to hire a developer and an accounts manager.
