Nippon Shinyaku Selects and Deploys the Symyx Notebook by Accelrys

SAN DIEGO–Accelrys, Inc., a leading scientific enterprise R&D software and services company, today announced that Nippon Shinyaku Co. selected the Symyx Notebook by Accelrys Electronic Laboratory Notebook (ELN) after evaluating various vendors and successfully launched the solution in August.

“In 2010, Nippon began evaluating ELN solutions for two labs in two locations. After evaluating several vendors’ offerings, we found that the Symyx Notebook by Accelrys offered the best solution for boosting research efficiency and meeting the challenges imposed by government regulations and legislation,” said Dr. Masato Matsuoka, general manager of Nippon Shinyaku Co. “Our initial ELN deployment has been very successful in meeting these goals, and we look forward to collaborating with Accelrys on a broader roll out.”

Nippon had two objectives in moving to an ELN. First, they wanted to boost research efficiency and accelerate patent applications by moving from paper to more flexible electronic templates. Second, they wanted the ability to respond quickly to legislative and regulatory requirements to track test reagents and products back to the beginning of the product planning cycle.

Nippon began production in the Exploratory Synthetic Division leveraging The Symyx Notebook by Accelrys in August of this year; it plans to expand the ELN system to other areas of the company in the near future. Accelrys Professional Services, in partnership with CTC Laboratory Systems Corporation (CTCLS), also provided implementation support, analyzing the existing business operations of its R&D departments and undertaking a complete overhaul of its workflow processes, helping eliminate wastefulness and inefficiencies in its experiment procedures. The Accelrys Professional Services team has extensive ELN deployment experience and works with its partner CTCLS to support Japanese customers in realizing their ELN project goals. As a result of this project, Nippon succeeded in their Business Process Reengineering (BPR) project and expects to improve the overall efficiency of its R&D activities.

“ELNs are quickly becoming the standard in global R&D labs, from pharmaceutical development to academic research,” said Accelrys President and Chief Executive Officer Max Carnecchia. “Accelrys, with our commitment to science and successful software deployments in various verticals, is uniquely positioned to partner with customers on an ELN implementation that will return immediate, measurable results. I look forward to further collaboration with Nippon Shinyaku and seeing how the progress they make will impact the next generation of pharmaceuticals.”

About Symyx Notebook by Accelrys

The multidisciplinary Symyx Notebook by Accelrys enables cross-disciplinary teams to collaborate more effectively in moving therapeutic substances and related information from research through development to early manufacturing using efficient, validated and compliant processes. With no custom coding required, the notebook offers out-of-the-box capabilities supporting analytical, process and formulation teams working in small and large molecule development.

Integration of Symyx Notebook by Accelrys with existing laboratory information management systems (LIMS), scientific data management systems (SDMS), chromatography data systems (CDS) and other lab informatics solutions optimizes IP collection and transfer between scientific domains by ensuring consistent, accurate information storage and data processing. In pharmaceutical product development processes, the ELN helps build more efficient development processes. Furthermore, by reducing the time from pharmaceutical formulation to clinical trials, it accelerates the compilation of documents to be submitted under relevant legislation.
