Nomic’s Proteomics Platform to Power VO Health’s Molecular Fitness Insights
VO Health’s Molecular Fitness Blood Test™ will utilize deep protein profiling to estimate VO₂ Max and characterize the biological pathways underlying cardiorespiratory fitness and performance
MONTREAL — Nomic Bio Inc., a proteomics company, and VO Health, a company developing blood-based measures of fitness and functional health, today announced that VO Health is using Nomic’s proteomics platform to develop its Molecular Fitness Blood Test, a new product for measuring VO₂ Max and providing insight into the biology underlying fitness.
Built on protein measurements generated by the Nomic Omni 1000 platform, the Molecular Fitness Blood Test is designed for use by athletes, coaches, clinicians, performance centers, gyms and sports organizations seeking a more accessible way to measure and monitor fitness and performance.
VO₂ Max, the measure of the body’s ability to take in, transport and use oxygen during exercise, is a physiological biomarker of cardiorespiratory fitness strongly associated with both physical performance and longevity. Gold-standard measurement typically requires specialized equipment, trained personnel and a maximal exercise test, making it difficult to incorporate into routine or longitudinal health programs.
From a blood sample to a molecular view of fitness
Using protein measurements generated by Nomic, VO Health has developed a different approach: using the molecular information contained in a small blood sample to estimate functional capacity and reveal underlying biology.
The Molecular Fitness Blood Test begins with a simple self-blood collection capillary device. Samples are then analyzed using Nomic Omni 1000 to measure more than 1,000 proteins, providing the data for VO Health’s algorithm to generate an estimated VO₂ Max, a Molecular Fitness Score and pathway scores covering processes including oxygen transport, inflammation, vascular and muscle function, and carbohydrate and fat metabolism.
“The ability to estimate VO₂ Max from a blood draw allows us not only to make this critical metric more accessible, but to go several layers deeper,” said Brooks Leitner, CEO, VO Health. “For the first time, proteomic profiling can capture the integrated performance of multiple biological systems and deliver actionable insights into the mechanisms underlying the result.”
Built on paired proteomic and functional data
VO Health developed its current model using more than 1,100 paired blood samples and gold-standard VO₂ Max tests with plans to grow to more than 3,500 paired proteomes and VO₂ Max measurements by the end of 2026.
Nomic’s platform combines quantitative protein measurement with the throughput and affordability needed to bring new testing applications to scale. For VO Health, those capabilities support a path toward wider availability and longitudinal testing to assess fitness over time.
“VO Health brings a strong scientific foundation to molecular fitness testing,” said Milad Dagher, CEO of Nomic. “We’re excited to support their work with the breadth and scalability of our platform, helping them make a richer view of fitness accessible to more people.”
VO Health is continuing to develop and validate its molecular fitness offering using Nomic’s proteomics platform. Athletes, coaches, fitness-focused clinicians, performance centers, gyms and sports organizations are encouraged to reserve a spot in VO Health’s early access waitlist here.
