PerkinElmer Releases Western BLAST™ Amplification Technology to Simplify and Enhance Western Blot Protein Detection Techniques
Global leader in assay technology improves speed and sensitivity for detection of proteins associated with diseases
Experimental Biology 2009
NEW ORLEANS–At Experimental Biology 2009, PerkinElmer, Inc., a global leader focused on the health and safety of people and the environment, today announced the launch of Western BLAST™, an amplification system used to enhance and simplify Western Blotting.
Western Blotting is a common technique in life science research, including detection of proteins associated with diseases. It provides in-depth protein data, including molecular weight and homogeneity to quantitative assays. Most scientists use chemiluminescent detection for Western Blotting because of its high sensitivity. However, chemiluminescent detection can be hampered by cumbersome time and equipment requirements, result variability, and it cannot be archived for later analysis.
By contrast, chromogenic (or colorimetric) blot detection is visible to the naked eye and is easily detectable via common imaging systems. It also offers superior reproducibility, and blots may be archived for future analysis. However, use of chromogenic detection in blotting has been restricted due to sensitivity limitations.
Western BLAST is a novel approach to chromogenic Western Blotting, as it amplifies signal and yields sensitivity comparable to chemiluminescent techniques. The novel chemistries in Western BLAST provides scientists with the convenience and reproducibility of chromogenic detection combined with the sensitivity associated with chemiluminescence. Sensitivity improvements from Western BLAST can also eliminate requirements for expensive imagers or ongoing costs associated with use of film.
“Western Blotting is a cornerstone of life science research. Its utility in answering important questions in many research areas is well-known,” said Richard M. Eglen, Ph.D., president, Bio-discovery, PerkinElmer, Inc. “We are delighted to offer researchers the Western BLAST innovation to this basic tool, created with proprietary PerkinElmer CARD (CAtalyzed Reporter Deposition) technology that is designed to provide all the information of Western Blot techniques in less time and with less input.”
PerkinElmer offers Western BLAST as a fully optimized kit, complete with amplification reagents, blocking reagent, controls and substrate.
