PetaGene Collaborates with NetApp to Offer Simpler Genomic Data Services and Quicker Data Analysis

PetaGene, the Cambridge, UK-based leaders in genomic data compression today announced that they have become a NetApp Alliance Partner. Combining PetaGene’s expertise in compression techniques specifically designed for genomic data with NetApp’s leadership in data services across hybrid and multi-cloud environments offers powerful new ways to simplify genomic data management. The result is improved performance and reduced costs when conducting research using the enormous datasets created by the explosion in genomic sequencing.

The benefits of using PetaGene compression with NetApp solutions are clear:

  • Files made between 60% and 90% smaller by compression use less storage capacity and therefore decrease costs.
  • They increase collaborative efficiency by being quicker to transfer over the NetApp® Data Fabric.
  • It’s easier to leverage the flexibility of the cloud using the NetApp Data Fabric. For example, cold data can be tiered to the cloud by using NetApp FabricPool, freeing performance tiers for new sequencing projects.

Research by PetaGene and NetApp has identified specific client use cases where the combination is particularly powerful. These include:

  1. Transferring backlog processing to the cloud
  2. Scaling sample processing
  3. Scaling out a global repository for genomic data

Dan Greenfield CEO & Co-founder of PetaGene commented, “Partnering with a leading data services provider such as NetApp will allow holders of genomic data to access ready to deploy solutions for the storage and management of their data, with the benefits of our compression technology already built-in.”

“We’re proud to be working with PetaGene to deliver strategic genomic data management solutions that enable better research results for the benefit of the human race,” said David LaBrosse, global director, Emerging Markets: Genomics, Life Sciences, Healthcare at NetApp. “By helping to simplify the management of data-driven workloads and offering solutions that can scale in, to and across any cloud, we can enable more flexibility and efficiency in managing the mass amount of genomic sequencing data that powers important genomics research.”
