Protein Discovery Inc. to Introduce Programmable Molecular Weight Fractionation System at ASMS 2009 Conference

KNOXVILLE, TN–May 28, 2009 — The GELFREE(TM) 8100 Fractionation System is the first instrument for proteomics that partitions complex protein mixtures into user-selectable, liquid-phase molecular weight fractions. Protein Discovery anticipates that the new system will be utilized broadly by proteomics research laboratories in combination with routine research techniques such as IEF, trypsin digestion, western blotting, and LC/MS. The company will display the new system at the ASMS Conference on Mass Spectrometry, May 31 – June 4, at the Pennsylvania Convention Center in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

“Very soon, Protein Discovery’s GELFREE System will be considered essential equipment for proteomics research, especially by scientists who are taking advantage of the resolving power of mass spectrometry to study intact proteins,” said Neil Kelleher PhD, professor of chemistry at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. “A molecular weight-based fractionation that provides intact proteins in solution and with high recovery opens up new paths to get high-value information about the proteome,” he added.

Jeremy Norris PhD, vice president of research and development at Protein Discovery, notes that, “All the previous methods of molecular weight based fractionation on gels and columns have been low-capacity, low-recovery, too slow, or too limited to a narrow size range. What’s different about the GELFREE 8100 System is that it gives high and reproducible recoveries of any fraction from 3.5 kDa to 150 kDa, and you can load each cartridge with up to 8 milligrams of sample so you can study very low abundance proteins.”

Protein Discovery at ASMS 2009

Protein Discovery will present the GELFREE 8100 Fractionation System in the exhibit hall of the ASMS 2009 conference, booth space #20. The company will also host a lunch seminar on Wednesday, June 3, 2009 from 12:00 to 1:00 pm, which will include presentations by Neil Kelleher PhD and Alan Doucette PhD on the research applications of GELFREE technology. Additionally, GELFREE applications and technology will be the focus of three oral presentations and six scientific posters at the ASMS 2009.

Interested parties are invited to contact Protein Discovery for a complete time-and-events listing of the company’s activities at the ASMS 2009 conference.
