Shimadzu Corporation released the EDX-7200 energy dispersive X-ray fluorescence spectrometer simultaneously in Japan and other countries. The EDX-7200 offers up to three times faster analysis speed than its predecessor (EDX-7000) with up to 1.7 times higher sensitivity. The product was designed in response to customer needs for easier, faster analysis and broader applicability for a variety of applications, such as for analyzing hazardous elements contained in electronic components or for analyzing impurities in pharmaceuticals.

Energy dispersive X-ray fluorescence (EDX) spectrometers are used to determine the type and concentration of elements in samples by irradiating them with X-rays and then analyzing the energy level (wavelength) or intensity of fluorescent X-rays emitted from the sample. A key feature of EDX systems is the ability to non-destructively analyze elements in various sample forms, such as solids, powders, or liquids. Consequently, EDX systems are used for various applications by electronic device and automobile manufacturers or their parts suppliers that are required to comply with RoHS/ELV directives. Those applications include not only quality control, such as inspecting raw materials during acceptance or inspecting finished products before shipping, but also quality assurance of various types of parts. The high sensitivity is utilized for compliance with various regulations, analyzing material composition and impurities, and R&D.

The EDX-7200 retains all of the popular features of the EDX-7000, with about 1700 units sold since it was released in September 2013 (as of September 2021), but also includes advancements that provide faster analysis speeds, higher sensitivity, and easier operation. As a broad-line analytical instrument manufacturer with the largest market share of EDX systems in Japan, Shimadzu has the advantage of being able to offer solutions for inspection and analysis process steps according to each application by combining EDX with material testing machines, nondestructive inspection machines, Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectrophotometers, or gas chromatograph mass spectrometers (GC-MS). 1. High Speed and High Sensitivity

Improved part performance results in up to three times faster analysis speeds than the previous model. Analytical sensitivity is up to 1.7 times higher. That shortens the time required for analysis and inspection operations and improves productivity.

2. Supports Increasingly Strict Environmental Regulations

As stronger environmental regulations get implemented, customers are adding additional inspection requirements or contaminant analysis requirements for unregulated substances. Previously, analyzing unregulated substances required specifying analytical conditions optimized for each element. However, the EDX-7200 is able to simultaneously detect a variety of elements by using optional screening analysis kit software, which makes the system easier to use.

3. Wide Selection of Optional Products Ensures Flexibility for Configuring Systems

Optional products, such as a vacuum measurement unit, helium purge unit, and a micro-area analysis kit, provide flexibility for highly sensitive analysis of light elements or for analyzing samples in a wide variety of forms, such as solids, liquids, or microcontaminants. It also supports increasing productivity by using an optional turret unit for serial measurements.
