TECH VETERAN CHRIS MAHL JOINS OPENTRONS AS EXECUTIVE VICE PRESIDENT

Opentrons is excited to announce the arrival of Chris Mahl as our new Executive Vice President and Chief Revenue Officer

BROOKLYN, NY – As Opentrons continues its upward trajectory, including the recent opening of the Pandemic Response Lab (PRL), New York City’s only dedicated COVID-19 testing facility, we’re thrilled to announce the arrival of Chris Mahl as our new Executive Vice President and Chief Revenue Officer.

In this role, Mahl will lead all market and client functions, helping Opentrons expand to new markets, reach new customers, and deepen our commitment to existing partners while staying true to our core mission. Mahl brings with him more than two decades of experience and expertise in building industry-defining technology companies with a dedication to customer value.

“Opentrons’ technology is making a significant impact on public health and safety in a time of need,” says Vinod Khosla, founder of Khosla Ventures. “Building a world-class team is crucial to achieve their mission of supporting collaboration within the scientific community. The addition of Chris Mahl is key to unlocking the full potential of the Opentrons technology and vision.”

Throughout his career, Chris has helped companies like Salesforce.com, Informatica, and RightMedia navigate high growth stages to become established, customer-centric organizations and market leaders. Prior to Opentrons, Chris served as President and Chief Revenue Officer at botkeeper and also was Chief Revenue and Strategy Officer at SCVNGR | LevelUp. Mahl serves as a Board of Directors Member at Omnichain Solutions and Advisor & Investor at 10 Ventures. He graduated from Boston College with a Bachelor of Science degree in Finance and Marketing.

Mahl joins Opentrons at a moment of profound change in the life science and robotics business. His presence will help expand our mission to empower collaborative research by providing automated lab technology and a common platform that enables biologists to more easily reproduce each other’s work. Opentrons technology is currently helping institutions save time and money—more than 2,000 R&D labs globally use its robots, including 47 of the world’s top 50 academic universities such as MIT, Oxford, and Stanford, and 9 of the top 10 pharmaceutical companies such as GSK, Merck, and Novartis. Additionally, its open-source platform has allowed more than 50 startups to develop and scale critical life science technology.

“We are facing some of the most pressing life science challenges of our time. As Opentrons seeks to meet this moment by bringing accessible, affordable, and collaborative technology to the field, I’m thrilled to have Chris lend his unmatched expertise to this mission,” said Opentrons CEO Jon Brennan-Badal. “Chris’ experience transforming tech companies from start-up to market leader makes it clear that he is uniquely suited to help scale Opentrons to the greatest possible impact on life-sciences.”

Recently, Opentrons’ robots and open-source platform have become an indispensable resource in the fight against COVID-19. Since the outbreak of COVID-19, Opentrons robots have run over 2 million tests in more than 100 labs in the U.S. and Europe. In September, the OT-2 liquid handling robot was deployed as a cornerstone of PRL NYC, New York’s first dedicated COVID testing lab.

“Opentrons was founded with a simple mission in mind: make life science easier and more accessible for more people,” said Opentrons Co-Founder and CPO Will Canine. “With the addition of Chris, we are uniquely positioned to equip millions of scientists, lab technicians, and businesses with better tools to create newer and more accessible technologies to help the world. I’m excited to work with him as we expand our life sciences approach to a wider and more diverse array of customers and collaborators.”

“I couldn’t be more proud or grateful to join Opentrons as its Executive Vice President and Chief Revenue Officer,” said Chris Mahl. “With its commitment to democratizing life science, Opentrons is one of those rare companies that has the right solution to the right problem at the right time. I look forward to sharing with new customers the innovative expertise and entrepreneurial spirit that brings me to this company.”

“From its founding, Opentrons has been about people,” added Will Canine. “It’s about the scientists we’re hoping to help through our innovative technology, the people who stand to benefit from the possibilities of collaborative research, and the endlessly curious and committed Opentrons employees striving to solve life sciences’ most pressing problems. In this next phase, we are focused on building a culture that drives cause, collaboration, and excellence. We are eagerly assembling the best and the brightest and encourage everyone interested in having an impact in life sciences to work with us.”
