Bulk Materials Analysis

San Diego, CA – September 26, 2006 – Thermo Electron Corporation, an industry leading producer of analytical and process instrumentation, today announced it has acquired the business and assets of Analyser Systems (ASYS), with operations in Escondido, California. ASYS is a manufacturer of a state-of-the-art, online elemental analyzer for the cement, coal and minerals industries. Terms of the deal were not disclosed.

“With the acquisition of ASYS, Thermo further enhances its leadership in providing online analysis and measurement of bulk materials,” said Ken Berger, president of Thermo’s Process Instruments division. “We also add depth to our technical base while leveraging Thermo’s global presence to ensure that all customers will be close to world-class support.”

Real-time elemental analysis of raw materials used in cement, coal and minerals processing has been proven to improve product quality and process efficiency, as well as eliminate costs and errors associated with continuous material sampling.

In cement processing, producers use online analysis to achieve consistent stockpile and raw mix chemistry, improving kiln efficiency.

Operators in coal prep plants and coal-fired power plants use online analysis to precisely sort and blend coal, helping them to improve coal quality, control emissions and lower operating costs.

In minerals processing, online analysis applications include feed forward control loops for grinding flotation and leaching circuits, material sorting, proportioning control for furnace feeds, and raw material stockpile/grade control.

The analyzer’s flexible, modular design ensures a perfect fit for any conveyor belt or material size, thereby minimizing installation costs.
