Thermo Fisher Scientific Demonstrates Latest Handheld Thermo Scientific Niton XRF GOLDD Alloy Analyzers at ISRI 2011

BILLERICA, Mass. – Thermo Fisher Scientific Inc., the world leader in serving science, today announced it will demonstrate the latest members of its family of Thermo Scientific Niton handheld XRF analyzers, the Thermo Scientific Niton XL2 GOLDD™ Series and the enhanced Thermo Scientific Niton XL3t GOLDD+ Series, at ISRI 2011 on April 6-8, 2011, at the Los Angeles Convention Center, Los Angeles, booth #727. The instruments of choice for scrap metal grading and sorting, Thermo Scientific Niton analyzers provide low detection limits for tramp and trace element analysis. Thermo Fisher Scientific is a pioneer in handheld x-ray fluorescence technology.

Thermo Scientific geometrically optimized large area drift detector (GOLDD) technology delivers faster measurement times and lower detection limits – as much as 10-times faster than conventional Si-PIN detectors and up to three-times more precise than conventional smaller silicon drift detectors (SDD). This innovative technology also allows analysis of light elements such as magnesium (Mg), aluminum (Al), silicon (Si), phosphorus (P) and sulfur (S) without helium purge or vacuum assist. When joined with advanced Thermo Scientific Niton analyzer proprietary electronics, new levels of analytical capabilities are realized.

“The Niton® XL2 GOLDD and enhanced Niton XL3t GOLDD+ offer scrap recyclers a range of handheld products are that engineered from the ground up to deliver new levels of productivity and analytical capability to today’s metal recycling industry,” said Marc Tremblay, vice president/general manager for Thermo Scientific Niton Analyzers.

Tremblay continued, “Our Thermo Scientific Niton XRF alloy analyzers are known around the world for scrap metal sorting and unmatched accuracy in grade identification. Thousands of our instruments are at work sorting and grading alloys on six continents, in yards ranging from top-tier alloy processors to smaller-sized independents and regional recyclers. What’s more, these alloy analyzers allow users to perform more than 1,000 readings in an 8-hour shift – from trace level analysis to pure metals and everything in between.”

GOLDD Technology

Whether users choose the performance-leading Niton XL2 GOLDD or Niton XL3t GOLDD+, the ultimate choice in features plus performance, they will benefit from the ability to rapidly analyze nearly every

element of interest in virtually all types of metal alloys, including light element performance for sorting aluminum (Al), titanium (Ti), bronze, zinc (Zn), superalloys and specialty steels.

? Niton XL2 GOLDD analyzers have a 45kV, 100 ?A x-ray tube and are lightweight yet ruggedly built to withstand severe environments. Ergonomically designed and featuring a daylight readable display, the Niton XL2 GOLDD incorporates customizable menus for ease of use, multi-language options and a standard analytical range of more than 30 elements from magnesium to uranium. It is the ideal instrument to get rapid results for tramp and trace element analysis.

? Niton XL3t GOLDD+ analyzers with their 50kV, 200 ?A x-ray tubes and tilting, color, touch-screen display deliver lab-quality analysis on almost any alloy grade and provide the highest sensitivity and measurement accuracy along with the shortest possible testing times. There is also a helium purge option for ultra-low Mg analysis.

A Family of Handheld Thermo Scientific Niton XRF Analyzers

Handheld, award-winning Niton XL2 Series and Niton XL3t Series XRF analyzers are engineered for taking measurements anywhere, anytime, with accurate results available in seconds, saving significant expense compared to traditional laboratory testing. These easy-to-use, nondestructive instruments provide integrated storage of all test results, which are completely tamperproof. Multiple communication options are incorporated, including Bluetooth* wireless and USB communications.

Both analyzers also come standard with Thermo Scientific Niton Data Transfer (NDT©) software, a suite of data management utilities that allows users to set operator permissions, print certificates of analysis to document results, export data into standard formats (.csv or MS Excel*), or operate the analyzer remotely from a PC. The NDT file format preserves and protects the original data from each sample analysis, ensuring that data is not unintentionally or intentionally compromised.

Thermo Fisher Scientific customers are served through corporate resources and a dedicated network of more than 70 distributors and 30 factory-trained service centers around the world. Thermo Scientific Niton analyzers are available in a range of configurations and with an assortment of optional features and accessories to suit a wide variety of analytical needs.
