Thermo Fisher Scientific Opens Nanoscale Materials Analysis Centre of Excellence in U.K.

EAST GRINSTEAD, U.K.- – A new surface analysis and microanalysis instrument demonstration facility dedicated to advancing materials science, nanotechnology, chemistry and physics has opened in East Grinstead, United Kingdom.

The Thermo Fisher Scientific Nanoscale Materials Analysis Centre of Excellence is a complete renovation of the company’s previously existing East Grinstead demonstration laboratory. The facility is designed to showcase a broad range of Thermo Scientific X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), energy-dispersive X-ray spectrometry (EDS), wavelength-dispersive X-ray spectrometry (WDS) and electron backscatter diffraction (EBSD) instruments, and will welcome customers, collaboration partners and students from around the world. Visitors will have the opportunity to attend industry and educational events to further their understanding of nanoscale engineering and materials analysis. The Centre of Excellence will also work closely with regional universities and schools, including the University of Surrey, to provide both education and employment opportunities for future science graduates.

“The Engineering Materials Research Centre at the University of Surrey has been collaborating with the Thermo Fisher surface analysis applications team for more than 35 years,” said John Watts, professor of materials science and director of research, department of mechanical engineering sciences, University of Surrey. “As a result of this, I have been a regular visitor to the demonstration laboratory in East Grinstead. The latest renovation represents the most exciting transformation that I have witnessed in this period. Thermo Fisher Scientific has created a first-class facility where customers and students can experience how surface analysis and microanalysis can answer today’s materials problems.”

“The new facility will provide a state-of-the-art location to showcase the breadth of our offering for the analysis of cutting-edge materials,” said Kevin Fairfax, nanoscale materials analysis general manager, Thermo Fisher Scientific. “We look forward to working with our collaboration partners and customers to develop solutions that advance the possibilities of nanoscale materials science.”

The Nanoscale Materials Analysis Centre of Excellence will also:

•Be easily accessible from the United Kingdom and continental Europe via Gatwick airport;

•Employ a team of fully trained applications scientists dedicated to excellence in materials analysis;

•Offer hardware and software training sessions for customers, collaboration partners and students; and

•Bring additional educational and business opportunities to the East Grinstead community.
