Xenemetrix to Launch the X-7600 SDD Light X-Ray Florescent (XRF) detector
Toronto, Canada – Eurocontrol Technics Inc. (TSX Venture: EUO), a Canadian public company specializing in the acquisition, development and commercialization of innovative authentication, verification and energy security technologies, through its wholly owned subsidiary Xenemetrix Inc., today announced that it will launch a new Laboratory Elemental Analysis System at Pittcon 2011. Pittcon is the world’s premier annual conference and exposition on laboratory sciences to be held in Atlanta, Georgia in March 2011.
This new X-Ray Florescent (XRF) detector, based on the existing Xenemetrix EX-6600 platform, with the addition of new and enhanced Silicon Drift Detector (SDD) technology, with thin window capability is a significant technical advancement eliminating the need for liquid nitrogen (LN) cooling systems and providing for increased accuracy. The new system name is X-7600 SDD Light.
This new X-7600 SDD Light detector will enable elemental analysis of light elements in a wider application spectrum and with increased accuracy. In XRF applications, certain light elements such as Fluorine, Neon and Sodium are very difficult to measure without a thin window. The thickness of the window directly impacts the sensitivity of the light element readings. Until now, there has been no solution for the detection of light elements with a detector not using LN cooling. LN cooling systems require filling with LN on a regular basis and therefore are not used as field based portable detectors.
The X-7600 SDD Light will have a significantly improved MDL (Minimum Detection Limit) and will also be integrated into Xenemetrix’s new S-Mobile platform, which is a portable XRF analyzer, allowing for all the advantages of field applications.
“The implementation of these new detectors will enable Xenemetrix to penetrate the environmental and homeland security markets,” commented Bruce Rowlands, President & CEO of Eurocontrol Technics Inc. “Homeland security would benefit from the SSD Light technology’s accuracy and portability when deployed with environmental detection teams, first response teams, hazmat teams as well as firefighters in a wide range of safety related functions,” added Mr. Rowlands
XRF can be used to identify pseudo metallic elements such as Phosphorus, Arsenic, Selenium, Tungsten, Cesium, Cobalt, Potassium, Plutonium, Strontium and other radioactive species of metals that can be used in dirty bombs. The benefit of these new XRF SDD systems would be the ability to limit exposure to hostile events while conducting numerous readings and data collection in potentially hazardous sites, in a short time frame, allowing for comprehensive identification of the substances employed in the event. Hostile events could include a chemical hazard introduced via airborne dispersion, water borne dispersion or some catastrophic event such as an explosive detonated device. The range of devices that could be identified is extensive, with the quick identification and subsequent data interpolation which could improve the chances of limiting catastrophic events, minimizing exposure of the public to toxic substances as well as allowing for the accurate assessment of the area of contamination and the degree of contamination.
