Zymo Research Corp. Appoints New Member to Scientific Advisory Board

IRVINE, Calif. — Zymo Research Corp. has announced the appointment of Joseph R. Ecker, Ph.D., to Zymo Research’s Scientific Advisory Board. Dr. Ecker serves as Professor of Plant Molecular and Cellular Biology Laboratory and Director of the Genomic Analysis Laboratory at the Salk Institute for Biological Studies located in La Jolla, CA. He is also an Investigator for the Howard Hughes Medical Institute. In addition, he serves as an Adjunct Professor at UC San Diego, Cell and Developmental Biology Section.

Dr. Ecker received a BA in biology in 1978 from The College of New Jersey. He then joined up with virologist Dr. Richard Hyman studying the herpes virus at Penn State University College of Medicine. After attaining a doctorate degree in 1982, he then joined Ronald W. Davis’s lab at Stanford University. His current research at the Salk Institute focuses on genomic and epigenomic regulation in mammals and plants. He works on the application of DNA sequencing technologies for genome-wide analysis of DNA methylation, transcription and gene function. Dr. Ecker has received many awards such as the George W. Beadle Award from the Genetics Society of America, named Scientific Discovery of the Year by TIME Magazine, and also received the John J. Carty Award for the Advancement of Science from the National Academy of Sciences.

“Dr. Ecker has been involved with leading research to decode genomes and epigenomes and was one of the principals of the team that sequenced the first plant genome,” explained Dr. Larry Jia, Founder and Director of Zymo Research Corp. “We are looking forward to having him on our Scientific Advisory Board and are sure that his many contributions to DNA methylation, transcription and gene function, will help Zymo Research provide many more solutions to the field of epigenetics.”

With the appointment of Dr. Ecker, Zymo Research’s Scientific Advisory Board grows to eight members, including Peter Jones, Ph.D., D.Sc. Director of Research, Chief Scientific Officer, Van Andel Institute; Dr. Steven Jacobsen, Professor, University of California-Los Angeles; Dr. Alexander Meissner, Director, Max Planck Institute for Molecular Genetics; Dr. Martin Schwemmle, Professor, University of Freiburg, Germany; Dr. Jonathan Eisen, Professor, University of California-Davis; Dr. Frederic Reu, Medical Oncologist at the Cleveland Clinic Foundation, and David A. Sinclair, Ph.D., O.A., Professor, Principal Investigator and Co-Director of the Paul F. Glenn Labs for the Biology of Aging at Harvard Medical School.
