Thermo Fisher Scientific Buys Cell Culture Technology
The OptiCell cell culture format resembles a microplate and consists of two gas permeable polymer membranes attached to a frame. It is designed for cell growth, monitoring and transport, and can be used during imaging, transfection and antibody production, among other procedures.
Rochester, NY 7/9/07—Thermo Fisher Scientific has acquired the assets of the OptiCell product line, consumable products for cell culture growth, from BioCrystal for an undisclosed amount. Thermo Fisher Scientific’s Nalge Nunc International subsidiary has exclusively distributed the product since last year. “This acquisition helps us leverage and further develop OptiCell as a next generation cell culture device,” commented Steve Silverman, vice president and general manager, labware and specialty plastics at Thermo Fisher Scientific, NALGENE and NUNC Products. “Furthermore, it will enable us to develop designs that utilize the film technology to support specific types of Cell Culture research.” The product line’s production equipment will move to Nalge Nunc’s Penfield, New York facility.
