Agilent Acquires Two Life Science Firms

HaloGenomics’ (formerly Olink Genomics) HaloPlex technology is a faster and simpler target-enrichment solution for NGS, according to Agilent, which currently provides array-based and solution-based solutions for NGS sample preparation (see IBO 2/15/09). The technology is a single-tube solution that uses primers and sample barcodes during amplification, removing library preparation steps. Agilent stated that the product complements its SureSelect technology by providing a solution for smaller sample sizes.

Santa Clara, CA 12/1/11—Agilent Technologies has announced the acquisition of two firms. Financial details were not provided. Agilent has acquired Halo Genomics, whose HaloPlex technology provides sequence-selective sample preparation in next-generation sequencing (NGS). “Halo Genomics’ unique technology and talented R&D team will expand Agilent’s solutions for emerging sequencing applications and accelerate our entry into the rapidly growing next-gen clinical sequencing market,” stated Gustavo Salem, vice president and general manager of the Biological Systems Division within the Life Sciences Group. Agilent will acquire BioSystem Development, which currently supplies Agilent’s Automation Solutions business with AssayMAP cartridges for protein purification and characterization workflows. “BioSystem Development’s innovative and versatile microchromatography technology, and the team’s applications expertise, will help Agilent expand its capabilities as a sample-prep provider for the life sciences market,” said Fred Strohmeier, vice president and general manager of Agilent’s Liquid Phase Analysis Division within the Life Sciences Group. The deal is expected to close by year end.
