Japan is set to develop its own genome editing technology, with the Economy, Trade and Industry Ministry providing funding of ¥8.6 billion ($79.6 million) for the next five years to companies, as well as R&D and academic institutes. In fiscal 2016, the ministry will provide ¥1.72 billion ($15.9 million) for pertinent projects that are submitted with applications to the Ministry by May 10. The purpose of the genome editing technology is to enable modification of plant and microbe genes for the production of medicinal products and “fragrance elements.” A research team will be formed to analyze and modify the genomes of plants and microbes to find more effective and accurate ways to develop materials for various industries, such as the pharmaceutical sector.
