A new program coordinated by the World Health Organization’s Regional Office Africa and the US President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief seeks to accelerate the accreditation process for African laboratories. Volunteers from the American Society of Clinical Pathology and the Clinton HIV/AIDS Initiative will train lab workers for accreditation in an effort to improve lab efficiency and standardization. Only a few of the continent’s labs are currently accredited. The program will implement a five-step process that enables gradual improvement. In Sub-Saharan Africa, there are an estimated two million deaths a year from both AIDS and tuberculosis.
