Agilent Adds to Molecular Spectroscopy Business

The acquisition adds handheld and portable systems to Agilent’s FT-IR product line, which it acquired in its purchase of Varian (see IBO 7/31/09). This is the second acquisition of a handheld FT-IR company in just under a year, following Thermo’s purchase of Ahura Scientific in 2010 (see IBO 1/31/10), indicating growth in the portable spectroscopy market and future opportunities.

Santa Clara, CA and Danbury, CT 1/18/11—Agilent Technologies has definitely agreed to acquire specific assets of A2 Technologies, a provider of FT-IR technology for laboratory and field use. Financial information was not provided. Agilent will acquire substantially all of the company’s intellectual property, technology, employees and spectroscopy product portfolio. “We set out to grow our spectroscopy business, which we acquired this past year when Varian joined us, so we can offer customers an even wider range of the industry’s best solutions,” stated Mike McMullen, president of Agilent’s Chemical Analysis Group. “Adding A2 Technologies’ cutting-edge, patented technology and top talent is a major move in this direction.”
