AMETEK Acquires ICP-MS Firm

Berwyn, PA 8/4/16—AMETEK, a supplier of electronic instruments and electro-mechanical devices, has acquired Nu Instruments for an undisclosed amount. Nu provides magnetic sector MS systems used for elemental and isotopic analysis, and has annual sales of around $25 million. “Its products and markets are highly complementary with our CAMECA advanced elemental analysis business, and it provides us with opportunities for accelerating product innovation and market expansion worldwide,” stated AMETEK CEO David A. Zapico. AMETEK also announced the purchase of Finland-based HS Foils, which provides radiation detector components, including silicon nitride window technology. AMETEK stated that the acquisition complements its Amptek, EDAX, CAMECA and SPECTRO businesses. Both companies have joined AMETEK’s Materials Analysis Division.

On its second quarter conference call, AMETEK noted that both AMETEK and Nu serve the environmental sciences, material characterization and nuclear markets. Regarding Nu’s purchase price, Mr. Zapico noted, “We’ve paid a price that was a little more than two times sales—close to two times sales.” AMETEK’s quarterly SEC filing disclosed a purchase price of $65 million for the two firms.
