Waltham, MA 8/4/16—PerkinElmer announced on its quarterly conference call the acquisition of Bioo Scientific, which provides consumables solutions for life science research, and food and feed safety testing. In its 10-K SEC filing, the company disclosed a purchase price of $61.0 million, net of cash acquired. On the call, PerkinElmer President and CEO Robert F. Friel noted sales for Bioo of around $11–$12 million. He stated, “The acquisition builds upon our food franchise with the addition of immunoassay-based technologies that detect pathogens, toxins and other contaminants. Additionally, Bioo’s laboratory preparation offering for next generation sequencing broadens our NGS workflow solutions.” He highlighted the company’s expertise in nucleic acid isolation, enzymatic efficiency, and solutions for detecting microbial and industrial food and feed contaminants. The company’s products lines will join both the Environmental Health and Human Health businesses.

The acquisition adds to PerkinElmer’s reagent business and ties in with its recent investments in food safety (see IBO 2/29/16). Bioo’s food testing products include ELISAs, strip tests, enzymatic assays and immunoaffinity columns. For NGS, the company provides library preparation solutions and adapters for multiplexing.
